Weekly quiz

We started this blog without quite knowing where it would go. We hope it's been informative and occasionally entertaining. We've noticed a steady rise in readership, followers and comments. Last week we had record readership again, and pageviews were up 27% during the first four days of this week compared to the same period last week, so we were on track to set another record. We have topped 10,000 pageviews since we launched in December.

A number of readers have sent us suggestions. We like to have feedback and comments because they help us know what our mini-community wants to read. It's pretty clear that readers remain focused on the application process, especially the interview. Posts on the interview have drawn the strongest interest.

Remember that there are several ways to keep in regular touch with this blog. You can sign up to have posts emailed to you by filling out the area marked "Subscribe via email" on the right side of the page. You can also receive the blog via RSS feed. To do so, go to the bottom of a post and follow the directions under "Subscribe to".

Feel free to drop us a line with your thoughts so we can tailor this to your wishes.

Our weekly quizzes have been a fun means of engaging readers. We'd like to use other ways of interacting: If you have any suggestions, pass them along.

Week in and week out, readers have found a way to penetrate the mysteries of SAIS to find the answer to the weekly quiz. Last week, Andreas was the first to identify Paul H. Nitze, U.S. statesman and co-founder of        SAIS, in the photograph. Don't ask me how he found out so fast.

So here is this week's teaser.

What is depicted in these pictures, and what does it have to do with SAIS?

Dear Mr. Graves,

My guess is - Fountain, DuPont Circle? I think that the video with Rebekah yesterday was a nice hint.

Nelson,

This looks like the Fountain in Dupont Circle (or the Dupont Circle Fountain. It is in memory of Samuel Francis Du Pont. Dupont Circle is where SAIS DC is located.

I am not sure if thats the "link" to SAIS you were looking for!

This is the fountain at Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. In 1921 the fountain replaced a statue of Samuel Francis Du Pont who served as an rear admiral during the Civil War. Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon, the co-creators of the Lincoln Memorial, designed the fountain, which features carvings of three classical figures symbolizing the sea, the stars and the wind on the fountain's shaft. Dupont Circle is known as the heart of Washington D.C. and it is right next to the SAIS campus in D.C. In addition it is also the starting point for Rebekah Lipsky's tour of the SAIS D.C. campus.

I've already got myself a cappuccino, so how about a lunch to complement it?? :) j/k

That's the fountain at DuPont Circle on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington DC. I've been there myself and it was also featured in yesterday's video.

What does it have to do with SAIS? Probably because it's just a walking distance from the DC campus and students hang around there and the park nearby?

Hello. It's been a while! I just wanted to reiterate how much I enjoy reading this blog, which for me has a great mixture of both useful and entertaining information. My comments are few and far between, but I am up to date and read your posts daily! Thank you again for keeping it lively and interesting.

For this week's quiz, I believe the above is the Dupont Memorial fountain, located in Washington D.C. where SAIS is. One would think that I'd remember it right away from living in DC for a few years, but I have to admit that the net helped a bit with this -hopefully correct- answer... :)

Hi,

This is the fountain at Dupont Circle, a 2 minute walk from the Washington, DC campus. I remembered it immediately not only because I'm interested in architecture, but also because I walked across the square when visiting the campus and taking part in a class in spring 2010.

Regards,

Alexander

Eight correct answers -- a record for our quizzes. Well done, all. Here I thought I could hide a clue in a video (have you seen "Blow-up" by Antonioni?) and keep people guessing, but no, there is no fooling this bunch. Congratulations to all eight of our respondents for their correct answers. And to three of you for having made the connection to the video tour with Rebekah Lipsky. Adnan - the free lunch is yours. But first, let me run to the bank to check on my dwindling reserves ...

Oh Mr. Graves, don't you worry !
I will be fine with a genuine Italian cappuccino...:)

Adnan

Dear Nelson, when will you inform the applicants about the results of the application? Maybe you have this information somewhere posted. Then please refer me to it. Thank you!

Shalva - Thank you for your question. The Admissions Committee will be meeting at the end of the month, and candidates will be contacted during the first week of April. I know it's a bit of a wait, but you can imagine how much work there is to be done, and we want to take the best possible decisions. Nelson
